Meanwhile, while the crew was chasing the sea serpent, the rum suddenly ran out in the hold. Everyone is in shock.

In the morning, unaccustomed to the routine, everything was falling apart, and everything was mixed up. They sat down and started sorting things out again. It turned out that there was just enough rum for the journey home, and there was no sign of the serpent.

A mutiny broke out, sabotage, a strike. They sat down and refused to move, keeping silent like they had saltwater in their mouths. And the sun kept climbing closer to its zenith.

The captain was an idealist. "Friends, brothers, the sun—let's sail toward those rocks!" he cried out. "The serpent is surely hiding there, I think I saw the gleam of its scales!" Meanwhile, the ship started to leak.

Here, the captain, followed by his crew, spotted the flags of an enemy fleet on the horizon. What to do, they all panicked together?! The serpent, the rum, the leak, or prepare for battle.
Can you guess what the captain decided?
(Oh, by the way, there was a quartermaster, but he's ill, so the captain still makes all the decisions, though sometimes he goes to the quartermaster's cabin for advice.)

The captain woke up in a half-delirium. Sunday, Thursday, evening? Who am I? Jack Sparrow, Morgan, Barmaley? What century is this? Chaos all around.vice.)

The quartermaster, on his last breath, rasped, "You idiot, you locked yourself in the cabin and drank the last of the rum. You've been asleep for three days. The calm won’t break, the leak is still leaking, the deck’s on fire, and the pirates are in a panic."
The captain straightened his shoulders and grew deeply concerned.

In a panic, the captain began methodically carrying out tasks. First, buy some gunpowder and load the harpoon, then the cannon could be dealt with. He whistled for the cabin boy to climb all the way up for a reconnaissance. The cook was making borscht. The sailors started running around in small, coordinated groups. The captain was both angry and energized. Somewhere in his eyes reflected a green island—perhaps it was roses blooming and smoke rising from a chimney, or maybe a forest fire was starting.
They began singing "Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest," each in their own tune.

Staring at the green slopes, the captain suddenly remembered that he was utterly fed up with this ship, these pirates, the rum, the chain of command, the holds, and all the other nonsense. What he really wanted was his own ranch, a horse with a fiery mane, to eat apples together, and to lounge in the hay.
But the dead calm still held fast.

The captain, tormented by fever, cried, laughed, worried about the rum, rejoiced in his toothless childhood, and fumed at the damn fleet, knowing that eventually he’d have to beg for dinars, or doubloons, or whatever gold they had. The quartermaster came to his senses and asked, "But what did you want? How did you want it? HOW did you want it? The fact that you feel bad now is normal; you will recover."
The captain knew how he did NOT want it, and to figure that out, he had to understand what was actually burning and smoldering here, who had started the fire. Could the issue be resolved at sea, so to speak, though there wasn’t even a hint of land in sight?

So, it was fear that was smoldering, burning up, reeking with fumes so strong it made your eyes water. The captain had to swallow that fear—there was no way to reach the shore through this stench and smoke, no way to catch the serpent by the tail, no chance to claim that rainbow-scaled prize.
He had to either face the fear head-on and march into the smoke and fumes, or give up and sit down on that chair, which wasn’t fit for sitting on in the first place.
So, the captain went forward. The dragon flared up, who knows why—maybe because of the captain’s stupidity, his audacity, or his clownish mustache. Who the hell knows what goes on in a dragon’s mind.
They stared each other down and then went their separate ways.

He returned completely dazed, scorched, and exhausted. Something inside him had been burned out, perhaps forever. The ship needed repairs, but they could only be done on shore. They tossed the bodies overboard, drew up new maps, and set off on a smaller course

In the distance, in the coastal waves, sirens sang in different voices. The captain, of course, wished he could see them at least once in his life... He had seen one before, but the situation had gotten out of hand. He wanted to have control - to own an island, a ranch, a horse, and to listen to their songs. So, while his hands were still being torn to bloody shreds, the captain dreamed. He needed some kind of escape, after all.

Despair enveloped him—not freezing him, but wrapping him in its cold, damp blanket, draining his strength. The captain rowed and turned the wheel, knowing it was the only way to reach the shore. But the outcome was always a matter of chance. A story can only be called sad or happy once it’s over. He still had that to discover.

As the captain furiously turned the helm, and the remaining crew strained at the oars, all the unnecessary layers began to peel away from him. Everything that held him back, and everything that hindered the ship's progress—fears, shoes, doubts, expectations, random stools, and flourishes—fell away. What sailed over the waves now was just a bare skeleton, and the captain stood on the bridge, disheveled, wearing some red shirt. His emotions had run dry.

Weathered, dried out, and exhausted, the captain stepped onto solid ground. What lay beyond was unclear; the shore was renewed and unfamiliar. But even without his captain's chair - more than that, only without it—the captain truly felt like a captain. He had no expectations.

In truth, nothing much was happening here either. The captain sat, weak and bare, among the coastal rocks, waiting for the weather to change.

The captain was awakened by kicks to the stomach - it was the quartermaster. Having recovered on the shore, well-rested and filled with coconut milk, the quartermaster had regained his strength. Strong enough to grab the captain by the collar and scream in his face at the top of his lungs, "You owe me! You didn’t do everything you could!" Then he overpowered him and took control of the crew. But the captain wasn’t upset.

The quartermaster immediately set to work, sending out letters, lighting bonfires, and scrawling messages in giant letters. The sailors marched in orderly columns, demonstrating their readiness for anything—they even chopped wood and prepared trenches.
Meanwhile, the captain found himself with more time to daydream above the clouds, sculpting something out of his own excrement, swimming out into the open sea, and observing what the ocean floor looked like.

It was fortunate that the quartermaster recovered. In his hairy, calloused hands, order was restored. A makeshift shelter even appeared. The captain snuck inside and smiled, and it seemed as if no one noticed. Somehow, things had turned out in such a way that nearly everyone found themselves in good health. A wind suddenly filled the remaining sails, and from somewhere in the mountains, the wild horses were still neighing. Everyone smiled.
It didn’t feel right to call this the end, but a final mark had to be made.
